Let’s be very sure that we learn the lesson from the fig tree—and thus have hope. The Jewish people have been back in their homeland now since 1948. It’s a way that He taught spiritual truth by comparing important concepts with well-known, everyday-life situations or things. Now; one of the things that I have wondered is why it would be that He would tell His disciples this. For many months in the winter, they’re not very attractive to look at. This Marcan Apocalypse is complicated by the presence of a fundamental tension in the narrative: even while exhorting his followers to be aware of the coming events, he also tells them not to get too excited over possible signs of the End Times. Let the reader understand: Some say that the abomination of desolation was fulfilled in A.D. 70 when Jerusalem was destroyed, and that this ties in with the destruction of the temple promised in Mark 13:2. In this case, it would mean the church that originated with Jesus' four-person audience. Jesus, seeing Peter’s meaning, proceeds to give, first, a generous answer, then a word of warning. Jesus' truth is not transitory. He lets them know that not even He Himself knows the time appointed for His return; and that the exact time is known only to the Father. It’s as if our kind and compassionate heavenly Father tells us in advance—very tenderly—that sometimes, something necessary will hurt; but He promises that it will only hurt for a little while. In verse 30, He says, “Assuredly, I say to you …” And I believe you have grown to appreciate—as I have—that these words always causes one of Jesus’ statements to stand out in a very important way. And by May, you see the apples begin to grow and get bigger. Before that time, the land was barren; and no one really wanted it. One, summer is very near.
